Guarded Weavings
2024

Linen, cotton and wool
During this project I was thinking about fabric as an intermediary or membrane between two zones: between a viewer and an object. For example, fabric is used to wrap an object for protection, or as a gauze on a window for privacy or a porous fabric covering a building site. In all of these cases fabric is something that separates, protects and encloses.

I wanted to capture this idea of a permeable layer guarding our view of an image, so I used doubleweave with layers of varying density to create a gauze between the viewer and an underlying image. For the higher layer I wove with a linen weft which gave the gauze a wiry and unstable lattice.
