Woodcut Weavings
2025

A series of hand-woven jacquard weavings based on woodcut prints.
Featured in Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2025

Working with pictorial weaving, there’s always a certain amount of translation in my work: from a sketch on paper to the binary code of weaving to the physical meeting of warp and weft threads. Each stage of the process leaves traces and I’m intrigued by which elements of an initial sketch translate to the final weaving and which don’t. Before I ever worked on a loom I studied printmaking so I was always interested in finding a meeting point between these two visual languages.

While I see a lot of similarities in the process-heavy mediums of print and weave, I wanted to combine woodblock and weaving for their differences; woodblock can be physical, unpredictable, raw and perhaps even crude compared to the grid and order of weaving. Wood splinters unexpectedly, your hand can skid along the surface leaving an unplanned groove and the printing process itself reveals the irregularity of the wood grain. These combine to give woodblocks an energy and presence that I wanted to capture in a woven work.
